Today is a day to sit down and reflect on all the blessings that we have. One thing I know that we all have in common, is the blessing of a free country. A safe country. Men and women risking their lives on the other side of the world to protect us. We have these and many more blessings in common.

Yet these blessings are under attack. We can sit here today and merely appreciate them, or we can resolve to do something to protect them.

We have an open, unprotected border. We have millions of illegals taking jobs Americans want, and living off of our tax dollars without paying taxes themselves. In the upcoming election, we have a Senator from Tennessee that spent much of his career making it easy for illegals to work here. We have a Senator and Vietnam veteran who led the charge to give amnesty to illegals and put off building the fence. We have a mayor of NYC who stood up for sanctuary city policies. We have a governor from one of the most liberal states in the union.

Duncan Hunter is the one to stand up for a secure border. He built a border fence in San Diego, and has a perfect rating from Americans for Better Immigration because he has NEVER voted for amnesty, and has stood up for increased penalties on companies that hire illegals.

Many of us are thankful today for the blessing of having families that love us. Today, two border patrol agents sit in prison while their familes gather for Thanksgiving Day. The crime of these agents? They were doing their job, protecting our country from a dangerous, illegal alien trying to cross the border. The other day, President Bush pardoned two turkeys for Thanksgiving…while two of our patriots remain imprisoned away from their families.

Duncan Hunter promises to pardon Ramos and Compean when he is elected president. No other candidate has made such a promise. And while all the other candidates have been sitting with their consultants figuring out how to appear conservative, Duncan Hunter was writing a letter urging President Bush to pardon Ramos and Compean for Thanksgiving.

Right now, we have a trade deficit that is growing by 20 billion dollars a year. We are losing jobs by the truckload. We have nearly no manufacturers, which provide high-paying jobs and American quality equipment for our troops. The reason for this catastrophe? Most Favored Nation trade status with China, where we are being cheated by millions of trade dollars… trade dollars that are being used by China to build missiles, ships, rockets, guns, and selling a lot of them to insurgents that are killing our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Duncan Hunter is the ONLY candidate to have voted against Most Favored Nation trade status, predicting all the problems it would create. Fred Thompson voted yes. John McCain voted yes. Ron Paul voted yes and said he would do it again. Tom Tancredo voted yes (but in his defense, he admits that it was a mistake). Mike Huckabee is extremely happy that China is now becoming part of the mainstream
Duncan Hunter tried to pass a bill that would force China to play by the rules, and as president promises to fix these bad trade deals.

Government spending is out of control, while we continue to exhibit less stewardship in our defense spending.

Duncan Hunter is a stickler for making sure we have the weapons and equipment our military needs, and for cutting spending elsewhere. Duncan will support an amendment to require a balanced budget, and for drastically cutting all other spending so we may increase defense spending.

1/3 of my generation has been killed. 1/3 of my generation is missing right now. 1/3 of my generation was aborted. Right now, more children have been aborted in the United States than the numbers of deaths under Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini combined.

Fred Thompson does not support a constitutional amendment to protect the unborn, saying that it should be left up to the states. In other words, the rights of the state usurp the rights of human beings. Or maybe Fred doesn’t believe they’re human beings. Rudy Giuliani is adamantly pro-choice. Mitt Romney used to be very pro-choice, and who knows if he will “change his mind” again. Duncan Hunter wrote a bill to define life at conception, which would make the 14th amendment of the Constitution apply to protect the unborn. Duncan Hunter will continue work for that bill, or a Constitutional amendment to protect life, and will not elect a judge unless they can see a sonagram and see a valuable, precious, human life.

Duncan Hunter supports school vouchers which places education back into the hands of the parents.

Duncan Hunter supports a constitutional amendment to protect marriage.

Duncan Hunter supports, and was an original co-sponsor of the Fair Tax

Duncan Hunter supports low taxes.

Duncan Hunter supports our troops.

Duncan Hunter was labeled an enemy by a Soviet Union newspaper, during the Cold War.

Duncan Hunter worked alongside Ronald Reagan.

Yes, we have many great blessings to be grateful for… but take a moment today not just to reflect upon what we have, but what we’re losing and what we must do to protect it.

Duncan Hunter is wrapping up a big fund-raiser this month to give him that last big push so the people can find out who Duncan Hunter is. Instead of going out and shopping tomorrow (and buying hundreds of dollars in Chinese-made products), give some money to Duncan’s campaign. Give a little to the only candidate standing up for the strength and prosperity of this country and for ending the things in the way.

(If you can’t see the embeded donation link, go here: https://contribute.gohunter08.com/contribute.asp )

Some say that Duncan can’t win. By saying that, however, you’re only becoming part of the problem you’re complaining of. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. Stop being a part of the problem you’re complaining about. Stand up for what’s RIGHT, and what’s RIGHT can win.

Keep on Hunting, and may the Lord bless you and yours, and our great country, on this Thanksgiving day;

SK Johnson

GLENN: Now, one guy who I do believe on this is running for President of the United States is Duncan Hunter. Can you I don’t know what line he’s on. Can you bring Duncan Hunter up for me? Duncan, how are you, sir?

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: I’m doing real good, Glenn, and I’m here in Saginaw, Michigan in the heart of the arsenal of democracy in this country and here at a great company that makes process equipment and does lots of good things for the United States of America. And let me tell you, you know, I looked at that. I saw that police report. I saw the DEA report and so they’re finally prosecuting this guy who actually moved that load of narcotics after he had been given immunity by the U.S. attorney but just before he testified against Ramos and Compean and what an injustice, Glenn, because, you know, if they had told the jury, which the U.S. attorney refused to do, if they had told the jury that this guy had just been caught with another 700 pounds of narcotics, then his credibility would have gone out the window and the jury would not have believed him when he said he was unarmed.

GLENN: Yeah. Well, it’s

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: That means that Ramos and Compean would be with their families right now. So I sent a letter to the President a couple of days ago when that came out and I said, Mr. President, it’s almost Thanksgiving; send them back to their families; this should be the last straw.

GLENN: Have you heard a response yet?

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: Haven’t had a response but I did get Josh Bolton, the chief of staff of the White House on the line, went over the letter with him. He promised that he would give it to the President and give him my strongest feelings on this thing. And I also left him with this last thing and that is that if Scooter Libby could get a pardon for having 30 months on the basis that that was too much of a sentence for him, certainly under this scenario that we’ve now discovered where the star witness for the Government had committed another felony just before he went to the witness stand, just before he held his hand up and said, I swear that everything I’m going to tell you is true about these two border patrol agents, he had just been caught with another 700 something pounds of drugs coming through. At that point Johnny Sutton should have suspended the prosecution or he should have dismissed it.

GLENN: Or he should have, or he should have just let the jury know.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: Absolutely.

GLENN: You know, it’s amazing to me that everybody knows who these guys are that are testifying against O.J. Simpson, that we can let everybody know one’s an arsonist, one’s, what, a robber, one is an alleged pedophile or something like that. I mean, they’re all just the worst of the worst. And everyone is saying, well, nobody’s going to they are not going to convict O.J. Simpson because the testimony from these guys will just not hold up because of who they are and what they’ve done in their life and yet Johnny Sutton wanted to keep that away from the jury in this case. It’s incredible to me.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: He didn’t think the jury needed to be burdened with the fact that their star witness had just committed a felony just a short time before he testified. And, you know, Glenn, this goes to the very heart of the justice system. If you’re an American citizen and you are accused of a crime, you have what is known in the Constitution as a right to confront your accuser. That means you get to look him in the eye, you get to have your attorney question him, cross examine him and bring out any fact that might go to his credibility. No fact goes to somebody’s credibility as effectively in the law as a felony conviction, especially one that just occurred after the guy had already been given immunity. In fact, I know of no case in judicial history, I’ve heard of no case, maybe there are some, where the Government witness, after he had been given immunity, went out, committed another crime while he was awaiting the trial and certainly no case in the world where he commits this second crime and the U.S. attorney is so hungry for a conviction, they say, you know, we don’t think the jury should have to worry their pretty heads about that one; we’ll just let that go for a while. How convenient.

GLENN: Okay, let me ask you this: The story stinks to high heaven. The way he was arrested at this time during the holidays, et cetera, et cetera. There are several people that have said that Johnny Sutton was getting that Davila was getting medical treatment in El Paso and that he was supposed to have surgery and that’s what he was coming back in for was for that surgery. Do you know if that is true, that he was in? Because Johnny Sutton is on record saying, if I just knew where he was, I’d arrest him. But there are eye witnesses are now saying he was in getting government paid for surgeries and medical treatment in El Paso over the last year. Do you know if that’s true?

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: Well, listen, I don’t know where he’s been of late but I know this. I’ve got the DEA report in my office. I’ve looked at it and this guy was indisputedly linked by the witnesses at the site where they apprehended this van with another 700 plus pounds of drugs shortly before the trial of Compean and Ramos. We had that information and Johnny Sutton and when I read the report, it says after the DEA agent was told by the other people implicated in this drive through that the guy was the same guy who was testifying against Compean and Ramos. The description in the report says at that point the interview was terminated. The U.S. attorney didn’t want to hear that their star witness was a guy who was bringing a second load of narcotics across. That’s the message that I get. So certainly Johnny Sutton had him. But, you know, whether he had him physically at that point, he obviously had him when he came to the trial and testified.

GLENN: Right.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: And, you know, the evidence and I read this DEA report, Glenn. This evidence is very conclusive.

GLENN: Oh, I know.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: And they could have easily charged him at that point.

GLENN: I know.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: But at the least they should have put off the prosecution of Compean and Ramos. This is the one that calls out for a presidential pardon. Let’s hope this Thanksgiving the President of the United States looks at these facts and says send them home to their families.

GLENN: He’s going to pardon the turkey. So we know we’ve got that one coming. Duncan Hunter, he’s running for President of the United States. I have to tell you, he’s the one guy that is consistently on the border and our sovereignty and on our military, and I include our cops on the frontline and our border guards on the frontline when he say troops. He has a very clear record on those things. Can you do me a favor, Congressman Hunter, and help me find the truth and maybe you know it off the top of your head. We have 21 Americans that are still missing from the Laredo area. I brought this up and opened this can of worms up about a week and a half ago on Laredo and boy, oh, boy, you would think that you know, you would think that I was the Antichrist. The snakes that have started to scurry around and try to wrap around my arteries are amazing. Congressman Cuellar has invited Nancy Pelosi down and she came down to Laredo to speak on Saturday to tell all the people of Laredo how the congress is just behind them 110% and they are going to rush with money down there. I think it happened because Cuellar is freaking out because of the light that I have shined on his face that I didn’t mean to do but he did and the situation of the hostages. Can you help me find out, when was that invitation given to Nancy Pelosi to speak? I know that it was announced one or two days after this scandal broke out with him and what we’ve been covering.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: Well, Glenn, here’s what I can tell you about Nancy Pelosi, and incidentally I like Congressman Cuellar and he has been helpful on the border fence, but Nancy Pelosi said that she would be against the fence. And let me tell you. You’ve had over 600 unsolved murders in Nuevo Laredo, which is right across the river from Laredo, Texas, and as a result of this I put in a priority on the border fence that I put into the law that the President signed that said that we had to build 15 miles of double fence on each side of Laredo, Texas, to stop the backpack cocaine systems where you got these drug dealers coming across from Nuevo Laredo and disappearing into the Texas brush country. Now, if Nancy Pelosi is telling the people of Laredo she’s going to help them, she’s sure not going to help the families whose kids have been hooked on drugs because she said she is adamantly against that border fence. And that double border fence, incidentally, is the fence that reduced the smuggling of narcotics and people in my San Diego sector by more than 90%.

GLENN: I have to tell you

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: I like Cuellar but I tell you, Nancy Pelosi’s been dead against us on the fence.

GLENN: I’m blown away that you like Cuellar, and I have to tell you I liked him as well until he was on I shouldn’t say I liked him. I thought he was on the right side of the issue until he was on my program and he just tore this local sheriff apart and just made him just belittled him.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: I didn’t yeah, I haven’t seen that.

GLENN: Yeah. And then he also said, he said to me troops will never go to the border; that’s out of the question. He’s for and please tell me you’re against this. He’s for sending the $1.4 billion down to Mexico, to help shore up their Army, give them eaves dropping and everything else. The Mexican Army and he border is corrupt.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: Yeah, well, listen. That’s absolutely true, and the last you know, several years ago we found that the general who was in charge of drug interdiction for the Mexican Army was discovered with, I believe it was $2 million or $3 million in cash in his bank account. He had been paid off by the drug dealers.

GLENN: Of course he had.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: And we had a number of incursions into the United States where we have Mexican Army officials and Mexican Army personnel coming across the international border. We’ve had a number of those, dozens and dozens of those, and in my estimation they are coming across to escort the drug trade.

GLENN: So why would we say until there is a fence up which, you know, I’m with you. I don’t know if that’s ever going to be built. Until there’s a fence up, in a situation like Laredo where you’ve got people being kidnapped off the street, you’ve got massive drugs coming across the border, you’ve got assassins coming in, why wouldn’t we put troops down in those really dangerous areas with actual bullets in their guns?

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: Well, there’s nothing wrong with having troops down there, and of the 6,000, we sent 6,000 National Guard troops down to the Arizona border primarily but we ought to have, we ought to have a contingent also in South Texas. But let me tell you, Glenn, when we put the double fence up, once again, and we’ve got it in the law and we put a border patrol road in between, we absolutely stopped the drug trade coming across dead in its tracks. That’s what we’ve got to do. And right now you’ve got officials in Laredo, Texas, you’ve got local officials and you’ve got individual landowners down there who are telling the White House that they don’t want to have the border fence and they’ve been fighting it. And so far, we passed that law one year ago that mandates the construction of the fence. We’ve got $800 million in cash available to put out to contractors right now, and we haven’t built a linear inch of the double border fence in the State of Texas. And you know something? The rest of the Texans are mad about that and they’re not happy and they’re not happy with the administration. We ought to be building the border fence and I put in the law that it should be built first in Laredo because Nuevo Laredo is owned by the drug lords and they are bringing that cocaine across in large quantities.

GLENN: There’s a reason why, when you go down to Texas, you see so many Ron Paul signs. There’s a reason. Because there’s very few people like you, Duncan Hunter, that actually mean what you say and say what you mean when it comes to, shut the border down. That Ron Paul revolution thing that is going on in some areas is very strong, and one of them is Texas and that’s, A, because he’s from Texas but, B, because they’re just tired of, they’re tired of the bull crap from Washington.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: Glenn, that’s true. Let me tell you that’s one reason I won the Texas straw poll at the Republican state convention by 2:1 over the closest purr sewer and that was Fred Thompson and I think Ron came in third in that but that’s because the folks in Texas know that I built the border fence in San Diego and that I wrote the law that would take it across Texas. So the Texans throughout Texas want the double border fence. It’s only a few of the folks that are in those border communities and some of the landowners who like the idea that they’re going to independently determine who comes into this country and who doesn’t come in. So you have a landowner right on the border, on the Rio Grande, and he’s going to point to one guy and say, okay, you’re from Iran, you can come in; you’re from North Korea, you can come in; you’re from another country, you can’t come in. You can’t have individual landowners making the determination as to who comes into the United States.

GLENN: Right. All right. Duncan Hunter, I wish you the best of luck and have a good Thanksgiving.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: Hey, and I got to give you one point of patriotism before we leave here, Glenn. I’m with this company. It’s called B&P Processing here in Michigan and I came here for a reason. One reason is because when they were offered a lot of money to sell equipment to Saddam Hussein under the existing law they could have done it legally, this company refused to do it. Now, that’s why you want to have American industry in this country.

GLENN: Yes, yes.

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: Where you have patriotic people who make a decision for national security.

GLENN: What is

CONGRESSMAN HUNTER: And the last piece of news is my kid’s coming home from Afghanistan on Thanksgiving at 4:30 in the afternoon and if Lena’s listening, I’ll be back, honey, and we’ll all be together.

GLENN: Thanks a lot, Duncan Hunter running for President of the United States. My nephew, one of them, I’ve got a couple of family members that are serving. My nephew, who is in the heart of it that we haven’t talked about really for security reasons is joining me Wednesday. He’s back home from Iraq and I stay in touch with him writing and some of the things that he has seen and some of the things that he has done and some of the friends that he has lost. I don’t know. I’ve been dreading it for the last month. I don’t know what to say to him other than God bless you, man. God bless you and thank you for what you’ve done.

April 05, 2006

It is difficult to change Rep. Duncan Hunter’s mind. House leadership officials and the White House have found that out the hard way.

When they wanted him to vote for a pending trade bill last year, Hunter (R-Calif.) refused — again and again. And when the Bush administration tried to convince the powerful Armed Services Committee on its controversial port security plan, Hunter refused to budge.

Twisting Hunter’s arm is impossible, his close friends say.

“The politics of the process does not really concern him,” said Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.), his colleague on the House Armed Services Committee who has known Hunter for 14 years. “He’ll never refuse to listen and works hard to build a base of support” for his ideas.

That has made Hunter predictable to his party, but sometimes also an unwieldy force to the Bush administration.

He refuses to vote for free-trade agreements even when the administration and leadership officials are angling for each and every vote, as was the case with the Central America Free Trade Agreement.

And Hunter, whom many call a protectionist, was instrumental in scuttling a deal that would have given the operations at six major U.S. ports to Dubai Ports World, a company owned by the United Arab Emirates.

“He was shocked that the administration approved the deal,” said Rep. Jim Saxton (R-N.J.), a senior member of Hunter’s committee and a close friend. Saxton worked with Hunter to introduce legislation blocking the deal and revising the foreign-investment process to ensure national security.

“On the Dubai issue, he got all fired up,” a congressional source said. Hunter gathered information to prove that Dubai has not been trustworthy — despite repeated administration assertions that the UAE is a vital ally in the war on terrorism.

It is not often that a guest on a TV news program has the boldness to put the interviewer’s political-activism past in the open, but Hunter wasn’t one to shy away. He made sure to point out, three times, that George Stephanopoulos, the host of ABC’s “This Week,” had worked for President Clinton, who supported the Dubai Ports deal.

“I don’t think President Clinton, your old boss, knows the facts of the transshipment that take place through Dubai sending nuclear components to all parts of the world,” Hunter told Stephanopoulos, in one of the references to Clinton.

Fighting for national security and the men and women in uniform is Hunter’s guiding mantra, according to those who know him well.

At a time when some GOP members are starting to cast doubts on the situation in Iraq, Hunter has been a steadfast supporter of Bush’s approach to the Middle Eastern country.

“I think we are going to be as successful as we were in … [disassembling] the Soviet empire, as successful as we were in bringing democracy to nations in Central America,” said Hunter, who went on several delegations to Iraq.

Hunter opposes troop withdrawal from Iraq until U.S. commanders feel that Iraqi forces have been adequately trained to defend the country.

The Armed Services Committee chairman also became the administration’s defender of U.S. conduct at military-detainee facilities at a time when human rights organizations, internal FBI and military reports, and lawmakers were decrying the inhumane treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Almost a year ago, Hunter went to the grocery store to buy the groceries and cooking supplies for the famous orange-glazed chicken and lemon-baked fish from the menu served at Guantanamo Bay.

Hunter held a press conference with the meal, saying at the time, “We treat [the prisoners] very well.”

He also called the criticism of the prisoners’ treatment “wild accusations.”

“Duncan is a very bright and dedicated individual, and when he has the ability to be creative for the forces that ups the power surge,” said Rep. Robin Hayes (R-N.C.), one of Hunter’s closest friends and a member of his committee. “If he were an atomic-energy clock, the energy would come from the men and women in uniform.”

“He is just a passionate person who sees it like he sees it,” said Rep. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.), a centrist who fought for a provision seeking greater controls of detainee treatment in the House. “Congress needs Chairman Hunter. It is not my voice, but people need to hear from people like him,” he said.

Hunter dropped out of college to join the Army and fight in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in 24 helicopter combat assaults in Vietnam.

But to this day, Hunter refuses to go back to Vietnam, and according to a source he said that the only way he would come face to face with a Vietnamese is “at the end of my rifle.”

Hunter did not return calls for an interview by press time.

Hunter is a strong supporter of increased defense spending, ensuring the military it has what it needs to fight wars and to transform. While Hunter is seen as a defense hawk ready to dole out money for various programs, the defense industry has mixed feelings about the chairman.

Hunter is a strong “Buy American” supporter. Buy American rules mandate that at least 50 percent of all work on defense contracts be completed domestically.

He also guards the principles of the so-called Berry Amendment, which mandates that all specialty metals going into military weapons systems be made in the United States.

“Hunter comes by these ideas very honestly,” an industry source said. “He has never been in the position to pull this stuff until he became chairman,” but Hunter “has not grown to recognize the reality of global trade and global commerce,” the source added.

His views are so strict that Hunter refuses to get into a foreign-made car. “He can be Detroit’s poster child,” said a source familiar with the congressman.

Hunter voted for only one trade agreement, when Bush first was elected president, Saxton recalled. “He was anguished,” said Saxton, who stood next to him while Hunter voted.

“Mr. Bush is my president, and I have to do this,” Saxton remembered Hunter saying. He voted for the bipartisan trade-promotion authority act, but later, when it was rolled into a larger bill, the Trade Act of 2002, Hunter voted against it.

Book Review: The China Fantasy
In The China Fantasy, bestselling author James Mann examines the evolution of American policy toward China and asks, Does it make sense? What are our ideas and hidden assumptions about China? In this vigorous look at China’s political evolution and its future, Mann explores two scenarios popular among the policy elite. The Soothing Scenario contends that the successful spread of capitalism will gradually bring about a development of democratic institutions, free elections, independent judiciary, and a progressive human rights policy. In the Upheaval Scenario, the contradictions in Chinese society between rich and poor, between cities and the countryside, and between the openness of the economy and the unyielding Leninist system will eventually lead to a revolution, chaos, or collapse.

Against this backdrop, Mann poses a third scenario and asks, What will happen if Chinese capitalism continues to evolve and expand but the government fails to liberalize? What then and why should this third scenario matter to Americans? Mann explores this alternate possibility and—in this must-read book for anyone interested in international politics—offers a startling vision of our future with China that will have a profound impact for decades to come.

About the Author
James Mann is author in residence at Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies and the author of Rise of the Vulcans, About Face, and Beijing Jeep. He was previously the Los Angles Times Beijing bureau chief.

Concise and persuasive, April 23, 2007
By Malvin (Frederick, MD USA) – See all my reviews

“The China Fantasy” by James Mann succeeds in thoroughly debunking the widely-held view that capitalism will inevitably bring democracy to China. Providing a brief historical account of U.S.-Chinese relations from the Nixon administration to the present, Mr. Mann makes clear that business opportunism has driven the agenda at the expense of human rights and democracy in both countries. Mr. Mann’s decades of subject matter expertise have prepared him to present a concise and persuasive work on an important topic that should be widely read and discussed by policy makers and concerned citizens alike.

Mr. Mann’s specific focus is on the public relations aspect of U.S.-Chinese relations. Mr. Mann contends that a succession of business-friendly politicians have sold the American public on what he calls the ’soothing scenario’, or the prospect of a democracy that will somehow emerge as a result of China’s deepening economic ties with the West. Mr. Mann explains that this rubric has provided cover for high-ranking U.S. officials who have often used their connections to smooth the way for multinational corporations to set up shop in China in order to exploit its abundant supply of cheap labor. However, Mr. Mann provides a number of counter arguments explaining why the soothing scenario is a highly problematic proposition, with perhaps the most persuasive point being that democracy could allow the masses of destitute Chinese peasants to easily undo the privileges that the relatively small Chinese upper and middle classes have enjoyed under the protection of the single-party system.

Mr. Mann alerts us to the importance of demanding China to enact democratic reforms sooner rather than later, when the Chinese economy might become too strong for outside influence to have any effect. Declining U.S. wages and plant closures caused by increased competition with repressed Chinese labor is but one well-known problem; the Chinese government’s support of authoritarian regimes in other countries so that it can propagandize to its domestic audience is a lesser-known but perhaps more serious issue. While one would be hard pressed to detect a political bias in Mr. Mann’s writing, the implicit lesson that capitalism can be wholly congruous with governmental repression serves to rebuke free-marketeers such as Thomas Friedman and provides grist for those who may be critical of globalization.

Interestingly, Mr. Mann makes a series of short-range predictions about how the media might frame its coverage of the 2008 Olympic games to be held in China. Mr. Mann believes that on the one hand, superficial news coverage will intend to pacify Western audiences while on the other hand, nationalistic themes will serve to paper over the reality of growing inequality on the Chinese mainland. The author also suspects that China will assuage the West with hints of reform that will probably never materialize while cynically parlaying its moment in the world spotlight to attract renewed rounds of investment.

I highly recommend this timely, insightful and important book to everyone.

Duncan Hunter is the ONLY candidate speaking out against China, and standing up to our government’s current Chinese policy. He predicted that they would be a problem in the future and that Most Favored Nation trade status with them would be disastrous. No one listened. How about now?

Elko Daily Free Press
Tuesday, November 13, 2007 5:56 PM PST

America is a strong country and Rep. Duncan Hunter of California wants it to remain that way.

The Republican congressman is running for president at a time when our position of strength may be in jeopardy. At a campaign appearance Monday in Elko, Hunter described the threats America faces from flawed trade agreements, a porous border with Mexico, declining industrial production and a reluctance to tap into our own resources.

“It takes us longer to permit one refinery than it took us to win World War Two,” Hunter told the handful of locals who turned out for his appearance at the convention center.

Environmental concerns also have held up completion of a border fence Hunter was involved in having erected to curb illegal immigration and the crime rate in the San Diego area.

“Peace Through Strength” is the name of Hunter’s political action committee. At the top of his agenda is having military forces that are “equipped and sized to defeat any adversary,” and missile defenses that are capable of intercepting and destroying incoming ballistic missiles.

A strong economy is equally important if America is to remain sovereign and at peace. Hunter said China’s practice of devaluing its currency gives it leverage to sell products in the United States, and China is using those U.S. dollars to purchase military equipment from Russia.

If a China-Russia alliance some day should decide to strike us, will we be ready?

Hunter compared our WWII-era industrial base, during which we were able to crank out one Air Force bomber an hour, with our current situation. When looking for armor plating for Humvees in Iraq, only one company in the country was prepared to manufacture them, he said.

The multinational corporations that flourished under America’s prosperity have become de facto Chinese corporations, Hunter claims, and they need to be wooed back home. America’s security and its chances of continuing to offer good, high-paying jobs hang in the balance.

So, how concerned is the average American about the direction our country is going? Not much, based on Monday’s low turnout to meet the most conservative presidential candidate to visit Elko so far.

Hunter doesn’t have the name recognition enjoyed by other candidates, and he is near the bottom of the polls. Still, should we be heeding his warnings about China and the decline of America’s military and economic power?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 2, 2007

CONTACT: Gary Becks (619) 334-1655, dlhunter08@yahoo.com

San Diego, CA – - – Presidential candidate and current Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Duncan Hunter, today called on former Governor Mitt Romney to send a “clear statement” to the leadership of the company he founded, Bain Capital, to terminate a proposed business deal with a controversial Chinese corporation seeking to acquire U.S. defense contractor 3COM. Bain Capital is attempting to form a business arrangement with Huawei Corporation, a Chinese corporation founded by an officer of the Peoples Liberation Army of Communist China, which faces allegations of assisting Saddam Hussein in the targeting of U.S. aircraft and in helping the Taliban develop surveillance equipment.

“I am extremely concerned that Governor Romney’s company would tout a highly suspect Chinese corporation as a strategic partner,” stated Hunter. “Forming a business partnership with a corporation known to have direct ties with terrorists and dictators while, at the same time, openly seeking to acquire a major U.S. corporation that performs vital cyber security work for the Department of Defense, can only be characterized as irresponsible.”

A resolution has been introduced in Congress, H.Res. 730, which states; “The preponderance of publicly available evidence clearly suggests that as currently structured, the proposed transaction involving Huawei threatens the national security of the United States and should not be approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States .” A copy of this resolution is provided.

Hunter stated in his letter to Governor Romney, “…while it is true that you no longer control Bain Capital, the contributions you have received from its principals as its founding member indicate that your influence within the company remains strong.

“Further, while the Committee on Foreign Investment has yet to rule on the Huawei transaction, this corporation’s connection to Saddam Hussein, the Taliban and the Army of Communist China should clearly disqualify them from becoming, in the words of your former company, “a strategic partner” in acquiring a U.S. firm such as 3COM, which performs vital cyber-security work for the U.S. Department of Defense.

“This letter is a request that you immediately issue a statement of policy that this transaction should be terminated on the grounds of national security. Please let me know what you intend to do.”

A copy of Congressman Hunter’s letter, as well as two articles regarding Huawei acquisition efforts are provided. Media are encouraged to contact Gary Becks at (619) 334-1655 for additional information or to arrange an interview with Hunter.

Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly says most of the GOP candidates who have been designated frontrunners are globalists. According to Schlafly, candidates Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, John McCain, and Mike Huckabee all “need to wake up” and realize they need the votes of Reagan Democrats to win.

“I think that’s a great mistake for the Republicans. I feel that it’s very important that they reach out to people on the jobs issue,” Schlafly shares. “I was quite disappointed with the debate that was broadcast from Michigan, which is an economically depressed state, and they didn’t appear to have any sympathy or compassion for all the millions of people who’ve lost their jobs that have moved to China.”

In the straw poll taken over the weekend in conjunction with the Values Voters Summit, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney topped former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee by a mere 30 votes. Schlafly contends that Huckabee was the winner among conference attendees who heard the weekend’s speeches.

“The straw poll was interesting,” she offers. “People were able to vote on it even though they weren’t here. They could vote for the prior two weeks before the conference took place and before they heard any of the speakers.” And in her opinion, that means one cannot say a whole lot about the validity of the poll.

Schlafly believes all that can be deduced from the poll is that so-called “values voters” are still shopping for their candidate. And she says while social conservatives are divided in many ways, they all agree they cannot support a candidate who is not pro-life. The Eagle Forum founder tells OneNewsNow the only GOP hopefuls she is comfortable with are Congressmen Duncan Hunter of California and Tom Tancredo of Colorado.

Duncan Hunter warned that unfair trade deals with China would cost us jobs, increase our trade deficit, and would threaten our national security. He voted against most favored nation trade status with China for those reasons and urged others to do the same. Fred Thompson, John McCain, and most of the senate didn’t listen to him, but his predictions came true… and now there is evidence that this trade deal has given China the money to build weapons that our enemies are using against us in Afghanistan as well as earlier reports surround Chinese weapons in Iran that were being given to Iraqi insurgents.

http://news.newsmax.com/?rWaVGHJjAqO5yLYM40YJjGUHDQr

2. Chinese Weapons Surface in Afghanistan

American and British officials have complained to China that sophisticated, newly manufactured Chinese weapons have been seized in Afghanistan.

The weapons include anti-aircraft guns, landmines, rocket-propelled grenades, and even the HN-5, a Chinese copy of the Russian SA-7 surface-to-air missile.

The weapons that have been found had their serial numbers removed to cloak their intermediate source.

High-ranking U.S. officials have accused Iran of received weapons from China and smuggling them into Afghanistan, according to a report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Transnational Threats Project.

But Afghan President Hamid Karzai, not suprisingly, questions that link. His country has strong ties with Iran and Iranian animosity toward the Taliban, who in 1998 murdered Iranian diplomats and Shiite civilians in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif.

“Whatever the source of the weapons, given the close operational ties between
al-Qaida and the Taliban, the latter’s possession of such arms, especially the
HN-5s, is disturbing,” the CSIS report states.

Terrorist groups, including al-Qaida, have tried several times in the past — unsuccessfully — to use shoulder-fired guided missiles to target civilian and military aircraft.

“Given the lethality of these weapons, the possible know-how of terrorists to transport them, and the close ties between al-Qaida and the Taliban,” the report notes, “the appearance of sophisticated surface-to-air missiles in Afghanistan should be of concern to everybody.”

“Beating Hilary Clinton 101 or The Confessions of a Hunterite”

by S.K. Johnson 10-19-07

In less than a month, I will be 18 years old. That day, November 2nd, 2007, is a day that I have been looking forward to and dreading for a long time. On that day, I will put behind me one of the most important parts of my life, childhood, and take my first big step into the world as an adult. Within a few days of turning 18, I will do something I have been looking forward to doing for many years. I will register to vote.

I grew up in a politically involved family, and have grown up with other politically involved and aware friends. I have been raised to understand the importance of our privilege, our responsibility, to vote. It is a responsibility that I do not plan to take lightly, and it is that determination that has inspired my renewed obsession with politics and my interest in the upcoming 2008 election. I want my first vote to count, I want to take hold of the responsibility that I have and become a greater part of this great country. I want to honor those who have died fighting for everything that this country is, everything that I am because of her, the men who died to give me the right to cast this vote.

Realizing the importance of the responsibility I would soon gain, I began researching the upcoming election with keen interest and determination; I was virtually obsessed for many weeks. I wanted my first vote to go towards someone and something that I believed in. I must say that I was not particularly enthusiastic about any of the candidates or potential candidates that I saw running, especially the front-runners who were the first ones I researched. Around that time, rumors began circulating that Fred Thompson was going to announce that he was running for President.

I am from Tennessee, where Fred Thompson once served as a senator. My parents knew a little bit about him, and I started reading his columns and downloading his podcasts. I have to say, I loved what I heard. I was electrified. Here was a conservative who stood for what I believed in, he was a hero. A good friend of mine who has spent much of her life politically active in a nearby state was at a Republican convention and brought me back some bumper stickers and yard signs for Fred Thompson. I was about to set them up the signs and put the stickers on my car when something held me back. I wasn’t quite sure what it was, but I just felt unsure of my choice of candidate. I determined that after all, I hadn’t thoroughly investigated some of the lower-tier candidates and decided they would at least be worth a look.

Suffice it to say, a few weeks later I was running a website, www.dhgrassrevolt.wordpress.com attempting to raise support for Congressman Duncan Hunter by providing news, my own articles, and helpful tips on how to raise support for Hunter and prepare informed grassroot supporters. What caused me to switch from the ‘conservative hero,’ ‘the next Ronald Reagan,’ ‘the articulate,’ the behemoth, Fred D. Thompson?

The question of why I switched candidates did not begin with a growing hate or disenchantment towards Fred Thompson, but a new excitement that I received from watching Duncan Hunter at one of the debates that had already taken place. I was astonished at his obvious passion, conviction, intelligence, and his confidence. Unlike with most other candidates, the more I researched Duncan Hunter, the more excited I was about him. He had spent 25 years in congress standing up for things I believed in, instead of 25 years just trying to get reelected or pandering to the party line. He was a hero for the pro-life movement with his ‘Life at conception’ bill which had over 100 co-sponsors. He was a hero of religious freedom when he stuck his neck out to save a war memorial that the ACLU wanted to take down because it had a cross on it. He was a hero of national security by standing up for missile defense programs when others were apathetic about them. He was a hero of jobs when he spoke out against our bad trade deals with China and predicted the current problems we have. He was a hero of immigration when he stood up to Ronald Reagan (although he was Ronald Reagan’s congressional go-for for many years) against amnesty (which Ronald himself regretted in later years) and has done the same ever since, as well as fighting to build the border fence. He is my hero.

I continued to look into Fred Thompson as a possible back up. I fell into a light case of the syndrome many others have been suffering from called the ‘Duncan Hunter’ can’t win syndrome. I believed in him, and I hoped I could help make a difference so he could win… but I didn’t think I could. Yet, the more I looked at Fred Thompson, the more I respected and became excited about Duncan Hunter. While Fred Thompson was voting for amnesty, against worker verification, against penalties for companies that hire illegals, Duncan Hunter was building the new border fence in his district and fighting for it to be built across the rest of the country. While Fred Thompson was voting for increased free trade with China, Hunter was accurately predicting the loss of jobs and trade deficit it would create. While Fred Thompson was voting for minimum wage increases, affirmative action, and campaign finance reform, Duncan Hunter was standing up for Reaganomics. Less taxes, less spending, more revenue and more prosperity for everyone. While Fred Thompson was sitting smoking cigars while talking about Michael Moore, Duncan Hunter was shaking hands in Iowa and getting out his message of secure borders, strong national defense, and high paying manufacturing jobs for our country. Duncan Hunter is my hero.

I have had discussions with many people about the differences between Fred and Duncan and usually come up with the same result. People normally won’t deny the facts that I present, they will not deny some blemishes in Fred’s voting record and they don’t deny how many great things there are about Duncan Hunter. Yet, they always say that this is all about beating Hilary Clinton and that ‘electability’ is more important than who’s the most conservative, the most consistent, and the one with the most integrity. To but it bluntly, I believe that’s wrong. Sort of.

Hilary Clinton will be a disaster to our country, and I am with you in wanting to do everything I can to stop her. Her socialized medicine program could put my family into desperate times because of medical situations that we have. It could do the same to close friends of mine who have other difficulties. Her foreign policies could invite an attack. Her economic policies will merely shrink the middle class and force them all into the lower class. I join with you in wanting to defeat Hilary Clinton. And since defeating Hilary is obviously so important to us, we should be extra careful in the primaries where we have a chance to pick a candidate that can truly beat her, and if possible, someone who will not only beat her but also stand up for what we believe in. Isn’t it worth some intelligent thought to determine what candidate truly could beat Hilary Clinton? Is it name recognition, charisma, and ‘electability’, or is it something else? Is Fred the most conservative winner that we have?

The mainstream media has been feeding us lies for the past 8 years. The media talks constantly about ‘a nation divided’ and will bring up the electoral college map from the last election and show how close the vote was and suggest that we are almost evenly split between conservative and liberal. As a result, many people have determined that the most moderate candidate will win. This is false. The reason the election was so close was because George W. Bush did not come across as conservative as he needed to be, especially after his first term. The more conservative the candidate is, the better they do. Look at the results of some elections over the past few years:

In 1976–Ford (a moderate) lost.
In 1980–Reagan (“too conservative for America”) won a landslide.
In 1984–Reagan won another landslide.
In 1988–Bush (41) won because America thought he was Reagan, Jr.
In 1992–Bush lost after he violated his pledge on taxes and America knew he
was a moderate.
In 1996–Dole (a moderate) lost.
In 2000–Bush (43) ran as a pro-life conservative and won.
In 2004–Bush won again.

The one who will win this election is the one who will appear the most conservative, or the one the most like Ronald Reagan in policy. When moderates run, conservatives vote for third party candidates because of their conviction, determination, and integrity. I wouldn’t want them to do anything different.

In an earlier article on my website (The Duncan Hunter Grass Revolt) I quoted parts of a study that indicated that conservatism is still the vast majority in this country. In fact, according to the study, if the Republican party garnered every single conservative vote they would win by a landslide unprecedented in American history. The article can be found here: http://dhgrassrevolt.wordpress.com/2007/07/27/read-this-to-anyone-who-thinks-we-should-elect-a-moderate/

A candidate that can rally the libertarian vote is also very important, the libertarian vote could easily be the swing vote. Anti-war sentiments are popular among many libertarians, but their hatred for Hilary Clinton will likely be greater because of her economic policies and her obvious flip-flops on the war in the first place. If the Republican candidate is not conservative enough for them, they will vote third party. If the candidate nominated by the Republicans is able to garner at least some libertarian support, that will help them a lot.
Furthermore, what helped Ronald Reagan was his focus on the middle class and fair trade deals which won him the support of ‘Reagan Democrats’ (conservative democrats).
A candidate that can rally conservatives, libertarians, and Reagan democrats will win.

So, can’t Fred Thompson fulfill that role?

I contend that he can’t.

1. The democrats and the mainstream media know the statistics and know the popularity of conservatism. Every moderate blemish on Fred’s record will come back to bite him, including his failures at border security (his ratings on border security are similar to John McCain), his support of minimum wage hikes, affirmative action, and campaign finance reform. The most consistent conservative will win. If you look at Duncan Hunter’s record, he has stood the most firmly on conservative issues of everyone in the race. He has perfect ratings from every important conservative grassroot group. Alexander J. Madison has written a series of articles about Duncan Hunter’s voting record as well as the records of other candidates; something he has spent countless hours researching. His articles can be read at my website, but are more easily accessed at www.newswhichcannotlose.blogspot.com

2. The same reasons cited above will hurt Fred’s chances with libertarians. Duncan Hunter, on the other hand, has had moderate to good support from libertarians. These were the results of a recent straw poll of mostly libertarian voters at a recent conservative convention in Nevada (the CLC)

1. Ron Paul 32.80%
2. Mitt Romney 16.13%
3. Duncan Hunter 14.52%
4. Undecided 11.29%
5. Fred Thompson 7.53%
6. Rudy Giuliani 6.45%
7. Alan Keyes 3.76%
8. Mike Huckabee 3.23%
9. Tom Tancredo 1.61%
10. John McCain 1.08%
11. Other 1.08%
12. Sam Brownback 0.54%

(This was not an entirely libertarian outfit, which accounts for Mitt Romney’s showing)

3. Duncan Hunter has been rallying support in the midwest, and is currently in 4th place in Michigan according to a state-wide poll. This is because of his message about standing up for jobs that are being sent to China, about fair trade deals instead of unfair trade deals. When Fred Thompson was challenged by Duncan by his earlier support of our current trade deals with China all Fred could say was that ‘free trade has been good for this country’ Hunter will gain the votes of the Reagan conservatives.

Beyond this, Hunter has the Iraq plan that people support. Several polls have been taken about what Iraq strategy most people would support and a vast majority (I believe around 69%) supported Mr. Hunter’s Iraq policy of standing up the Iraqi military so that we can leave soon, but leave in victory.

Michael Reagan (son of Ronald Reagan) has already said Fred Thompson is not like his father, and that Duncan Hunter is the candidate most like his father.

My friends, ‘electability’ IS an important factor. But the facts don’t lie. The facts are that ELECTABILITY AND CONSERVATIVE CONVICTION go hand in hand. They are nearly synonymous.

I hope you will join me in standing up for a conservative hero, not just because it’s the right thing to do based upon our common convictions, but because it will be the best way we can beat Hilary Clinton or any other liberal democrat.

In the places that this article is posted, I know I will still receive the same message that Hunter doesn’t have the name recognition, and that he just still can’t win. In every conversation I have had about Duncan Hunter I have always heard, ‘but he just can’t win!’

I want to pull the curtain back very briefly. There is one person that is to blame for Duncan Hunter’s current standing in the polls, and I believe with all my heart that there is only ONE thing holding Hunter back from tracking ahead in this race. Only one thing. This may come as a shock to many of you, but I have kept to myself the secret of this one thing for quite a while and I hope this revelation will help you come to a clear decision and help break down this low-poll problem that Hunter is suffering. The person to blame is YOU.

Saying that Duncan Hunter can not win is a self fulfilling prophecy, entirely, with little exception. If I had a penny for everyone I have heard say, ‘Duncan is the best candidate but he just can’t win’ I could buy hours of television spots for Duncan Hunter. I make no apologies and I will not handle this diplomatically, everyone who says that Hunter can’t win is the person to blame for this problem. I blame them.

Of course, the fact that Duncan Hunter is not a governor or an actor is a factor, but it is a factor that could have been easily remedied by breaking down the lies that Hunter can not win. Just like people such as Howard Dean, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton who had extremely low name recognition until weeks before the election, name recognition is a fixable problem. Will you help me fix it?

Will you vote for the only candidate that can really win? Or will you not? Will you join me by standing on principle, or face Hilary Clinton for president? Will you continue to be part of the problem instead of the solution, or will you not?

The choice is yours.
