CHEYENNE - In his effort to reach out to local supporters, Republican presidential candidate Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) also visited local supporters in Cheyenne on Sunday afternoon.

Although Wyoming is small with respect to its population, Hunter said it is important to meet with his supporters.

“Wyoming is very important in this race,” Hunter said. “I wanted to be in Cheyenne.”

Hunter also came to thank the Wyoming National Guard for their help in fighting the wildfires that have recently devastated areas of Southern California.

Hunter is a ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee and is a large advocate of the American military and national defense.

Differing from Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul (R-Texas), who also visited Cheyenne on Sunday, Hunter is a strong supporter of the war in Iraq.

“This operation (Iraq) is going to be successful,” Hunter said. “I think we are going to leave Iraq in victory.”

Other issues important to Hunter are that the United States has enforceable borders - including a 700-mile double fence across the U.S.-Mexico border and - to revitalize the American industrial base, and to ensure that the United States has a strong national defense.

Despite competition from within the Republican Party, Hunter said he remains in contention to win the presidential race.

“I have the potential of winning this race,” Hunter said. “I know it’s an uphill battle, but I think we can do it.”

Hunter’s wife, Lynne, agrees that her husband has a shot at winning the next presidential election.

“He’s accomplished a lot in Congress,” she said. “Duncan Hunter walks the walk. His record stands for itself.”

With a large field of candidates, both Hunter and his wife agreed that time is of the essence and that the next couple months will be an important time during the upcoming election season.
