Straw Man
by Ambrose Athanasius
An interesting and almost predictable result happened at today’s Straw Poll at the Family Research Council’s “Washington Briefing 2007” summit in the nation’s capitol. Religious conservatives showed their support, again, for former Governor Mike Huckabee.
Mitt Romney, with his very large bankroll and Hollywood looks couldn’t mesmerize enough of this crowd into believing a Mormon is no different than a Presbyterian. He finished second in the overall vote tally, which included online as well as onsite voting.
Many Christian conservatives, me included, are going to have to deal with the fact that the group of folks who frequent these events do not do their homework on candidates. Though Huckabee is openly pro-life, and the life issue was tops on the list of concerns of the attendees, his record on taxes in Arkansas is not that good. Ironically, this was very high on the list with the Summit folks. Also, it is clear, by policy and public statement, that he would be as bad if not worse than the President on border and immigration issues.
With the voting results, this crowd indicates that they feel China, Al Qaeda, and an open border are no threat. Duncan Hunter received a warm reception, much less than he deserved, perhaps we do not deserve to have a man of his caliber as a leader.
Fragmented, fickle and foolish: this faction of professing conservatives is no different than anybody else in being vulnerable to a good line of political rhetoric. God help the republic.
