Rep. Duncan Hunter Doesn’t Match GOP Shallow Boomer Values
One has wonder why Rep. Duncan Hunter hasn’t been celebrated and promoted as a premiere GOP contender for 2008. Hunter is a military man with a lineage of military heroes - with a father who served in WWII, Duncan Hunter serving in Vietnam as an Army Ranger, and his son having served several tours of duty in Iraq. Hcame back and got a law degree on the GI bill and got elected to Congress, representing the heavily Democratic 52nd District in San Diego. Hunter has distinguished himself on the House Armed Services Committee and has been prominent in speaking with authority on a number of foreign policy issues as well such as China. He was one congressman that actually got part of a border fence built in his district and has been an outspoken foe of illegal immigration. He has the highest ratings from the NRA. He is pro-life. for tax cuts and has been married once to wife Lynne with two sons and four granchildren.
So where are all those GOPers who want pro-life, pro-family, low taxes, strong military and foreign policy, strong economy? They are cozying up to candidates who with multiple marriages who fudge on social values, from elite backgrounds who earned scads of money, who have no foreign policy or military experience - and who have lost lots of weight - and have Hollywood cred!
Sadly, the GOP has its own version of the shallow boomers - who identify with those who are good people - but who represent boomer values - getting rich, dieting and working out, married a few times, dicey on abortion and who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk on national defense, foreign policy or military service. They have cut and run from traditional party values - and are in it not to win with principles - but expediency.
Duncan Hunter, at the Iowa straw poll, spoke like a president - not with the stump speech but with a resume and issues that go beyond the standard red meat. But that wouldn’t cut well with the media - or with the voters who seem to want someone like themselves - not someone who has shown love of country by putting his life on the line for it - and then served it well in the Congress.
